today, in light of eternity

what should i do today -- in light of eternity?
should i paint a picture, when it might never be admired?
do the laundry, when it will only get dirty again?
write a song, when it may never be played?
speak some words, when they may never be truly heard?
step out of my door, when i might never return?
say a prayer, when i may not get what i'm asking for?

nevertheless
these things i shall do today --
in hope that they shed light on eternity.

I love your post! We think "big" things impact eternity, but I maintain it is the daily things that impact eternity more. Or I guess, I should say our eternity. It really doesn't matter what we do in a way, does it, but eternity is shaped by the state of our heart while we do the things we do.

I think of the laundry in particular since it could be perceived as the most tedious of your tasks today! Oh to just be joyful doing the laundry -- once in a while it happens. You know, those time when just the smell of the fresh laundry is gratifying enough to compensate for the (sometimes) ridiculous amount of time I spend doing laundry to catch up!

I think actually that it is sometimes the more immediate picture that we "don't get". Ted Dekker's book "Blink" depicts this quite well, I think, with the lead character's mind being bombarded with possible futures based on the very minute decisions we make that impact others and eternity as well.

Well, it's late, and I doubt I have made any sense -- miss you!

I love that picture of that little boy em, where did you find that? I think the Lord is near to us in those seemingly "little" tasks. He can use the smallest prayer whispered during laundry to make the biggest impact--we just don't know! I think he is delighted when we do what is in front of us, when we use our gifts and talents for him, and when we just are who he has made us to be.

Em, you are making a difference for eternity.

love you. Mel

K, I know this is the dumbest thing ever to say -- but did you really write that -- cause it's REALLY great =)
I love it, in fact, you could send it around the world in an email, you know, like they do in one of those "pass this on to X many people if you really care" blah blahs....
on second thought, it's so full of wisdom, you better leave it here =)
Love you girl!

hey emily, i think we think a lot alike. it's almost as though we're related or something. anyway, join facebook.com just for kicks. darcie, allison and meredith are all on it. if it weren't for facebook i wouldn't know that marney nadjiwan was marrying johnathan stewart. you can have your blog posts automatically imported into facebook so that we'll all know as soon as you publish a new post. yeah. sweet. rock on.

Yo Em~ I think these questions can be frightening and inspiring based on the viewpoint. Sometimes we like to think everything we do has meaning or purpose. But what if we get so used to doing or thinking these things and miss the point? It's cool you continue giving yourself a reality check with these questions because it shows you are not one to wate your time on the things that are meaningless. You are totally a big picture thinker even in the small things. and that, my friend, will be what makes the difference in the world today. Keep loving and giving in all that you do sister. I know many people will be touched. I know I'm often touched by your actions, thoughts, art and presence.

Love ya!

Sacha
