tower of babel
today we took our little white toyoto into the bustling beehive called toronto.
massive mayhem: people crawling over one another like anxious children racing for a piece of candy which turns out to be a simple, empty wrapper. a teaser. a big city with huge buildings and no 'story.'
no doubt there are individuals performing miracles on the streets of canada's new york city. for example, i've heard of one particular ministry that's transforming homeless youth into world-known artists.
but what really struck me was the 'tower of babel.' that is, the CN tower. built originally to act as an 'antenna,' it can withstand hurricanes, earthquakes and tornadoes. yet its structure, while solid, is completely hollow. thousands of people were crawling its innards desperate to pay 20 bucks a piece to stand on top. to play superman for a minute. yet in the end, we all had to climb down and return to our homes... is it that meaningful to be closer to the sky?
for some, perhaps it is. after all, in toronto, it's one way to escape the soot. for me, i prefer to reach into the heavens from the floor, groveling, begging God to come down because i'm not strong enough to climb all the way up those stairs to find him.

Hey =)
I totally loved this blog...(I think I really usually love all your blogs) this one in particular just resonates with me. I love the empty wrapper comment...I think in some bizzare way, we're all walking empty wrappers...looking to get filled with whatever we think we need, instead of looking to the sky and become truly discovered by our maker. -- anyways, I always appreciate how you veiw the world - I miss you and love you! -- both of you =)
Love,Amy
(PS - leave it to humanity to charge people $20 to get closer to heaven and then have to climb back down - almost perpetuates hopelessness doesn't it?)

That's what this blog reminds me of. We so often try and try and try to make ourselves great - to live up to "God's expectations" (more like our godly expectations we have in ourselves). But, that's not the way... is it?
As Isaiah said:
Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains would tremble before you!
As when fire sets twigs ablaze and causes water to boil, come down to make your name known to your enemies and cause the nations to quake before you!
For when you did awesome things that we did not expect, you came down, and the mountains trembled before you.
Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who acts on behalf of those who wait for him.
In all of our striving, we completely miss the point. It's in waiting... being still that we cause the Lord's heart to stir. It's our still, contempletive heart that causes the Almighty to step down from His lofty throne and engage with the Love of His life.
